Description

Hoyas are beautiful flowering vines native to tropical regions of Asia, Australia, and Polynesia. They are known for their clusters of fragrant, waxy flowers and lush green foliage. Hoyas come in over 200 varieties, each with unique leaf shapes, sizes, and flower colors.

Light: Hoyas prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun, especially during the hottest part of the day, which can scorch the leaves. They can tolerate lower light conditions but may not flower.

Water: Hoyas are drought-tolerant and do not require frequent watering. In fact, overwatering is a leading cause of problems. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. During the winter months, you may only need to water your Hoya plant once a month or even less.

Soil: Hoyas need a well-draining potting mix that allows for good aeration. A mixture of cactus potting mix and perlite is a good option.

Temperature: Hoyas prefer warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C and 27°C). They can tolerate cooler temperatures but may not grow as quickly. Avoid frost, as this can damage or kill the plant.

Fertilizer: Hoyas are not heavy feeders. A weak, balanced fertilizer applied once or twice during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient.

Humidity: While Hoyas can tolerate average household humidity, they will thrive with higher levels. You can increase humidity around your Hoya plant by placing it on a pebble tray filled with water or using a humidifier.

Blooming: Hoyas can be encouraged to bloom by providing them with the right conditions, such as bright light, proper watering, and occasional fertilization. Some varieties of Hoyas are more prolific bloomers than others.

Propagation: Hoyas can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take a cutting with a few nodes and plant it in a well-draining potting mix. Keep the cutting moist but not soggy and place it in bright, indirect sunlight. With proper care, the cutting should root within a few weeks.

Hoyas are generally low-maintenance plants that are well-suited for beginner gardeners. With a little care, they can reward you with beautiful flowers and lush foliage for many years.
